Returning to Embusen in Kata is important.
Master Nakayama |
What are the important parts of Shotokan Kata?
When we perform Kata, is it important that we finish in the exact spot where we started? I believe the answer is “Yes". Nakayama sensei said so in Best Karate # 01 Comprehensive Page 94 He listed important points for Kata in that famous book:
#01) Correct Number of Movements and the "must" be performed in the Correct Order.
#02) You must start and finish at the same spot and follow the correct line(Embusen).
#03) Learn Kata and Optional Kata
#04)Correct use of Power
Correct Speed (fast of slow)
Expansion and Contraction
#05 All Kata Begin and Finish with a Bow.
For item 2 above, he clearly stated that “Kata must begin and end at the same spot on the embusen. This requires practice.”
Why is it so important to finish in the correct spot?
Asking this question is like asking why punch Jodan or Chudan, why not pick your own target. Kata is precise. There is no variance. Techniques, targets, rhythm, speed power....All of these are a requirements need to be included in each Kata.
